The first coin of the “Sailing ships” series has been devoted to a ship which was named after a Russian polar explorer Sedov right after the end of World War II. It owners as well as its purpose changed many times during the years. “Sedov” was a transport ship, a training ship and an oceanographic ship. It was built in 1921 and, as the only sailing ship equipped with a motor, it fulfilled its functions on the sea, and first of all upon entering and leaving ports, perfectly well. At present it may be seen during such events as, e.g., the Tall Ship’s Races organized every year in Szczecin.
