Since its release in 1928, Steamboat Willie has received widespread acclaim for introducing one of the world’s most popular cartoon characters, and for its innovation. The film is notable for being the first cartoon with synchronized sound and the first to feature a post-produced soundtrack. The film also featured Walt Disney himself as Mickey.

Donald Fauntleroy Duck is one of the most beloved Disney characters, first appearing in the cartoon The Wise Little Hen, released in 1934. Throughout the next two decades, Donald appeared in over 150 theatrical releases, several of which were recognized at the Academy Awards. An anthropomorphic white duck, with a yellow bill and feet, Donald wears a sailor suit with a bow tie. Famous for his semi-intelligible speech and his mischievous and irritable personality, Donald has a positive outlook on life and is devoted to his friends. Included in TV Guide's greatest cartoon characters of all time, Donald has appeared in a total of 178 films, more than any other Disney character.

The Steamboat Willie coin’s reverse features a sculptured representation of Mickey Mouse at the wheel of his handcrafted ship. The inscription STEAMBOAT WILLIE 1928 completes the design.

The Donald Duck coin face shows a finely engraved illustration of Donald Duck from his debut film appearance in The Wise Little Hen (1934). Set against a proof quality background, and relief engraved house from this iconic film, the design celebrates the 80 anniversary of this most loved character.

Issued by New Zealand Mint as legal tender of the South Pacific island nation of Niue, each coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2014 year-date and the monetary denomination.
