Ukraine traces its roots back to the Viking kingdom of Kievan Rus. Destroyed by the Mongol invasions of the 13th Century, its territory was carved up by various kingdoms until siezed by the Russian Tsar. With the fall of the Russian monarchy, Ukraine was made part of the Soviet Union. Devastated by the battles of the Eastern Front in WWII and Stalin’s suppression of numerous independence movements, Ukraine finally won its independence in 1991, during the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Ukraine uses the hyrvnia, named for the ancient coinage of Kievan Rus, as their basis of currency. The first hyrvnia coins were struck in 1992, but kept in the government’s vaults until post-Soviet hyperinflation was under control. The 1992 minted hyrvnia were released into circulation in 1996, replacing the former currency of the karbovanet at a rate of 1 hyrvnia = 100,000 karbovanets. Gold bullion Hyrvnia coins are available in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 hyrven, according to the National Bank of Ukraine. These modern coins are made of 99.99% pure gold.
