The Platinum Australian Platypus bullion coin was introduced in 2011 by the Perth Mint to offer platinum bullion investors a new way to diversify their precious metals portfolio. Over the past few years, Austrialia’s Perth Mint has become a major producer of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion coins, supplying not only Austrailia, but the rest of the world with premium, investment-grade bullion products. The Australian Platinum Platypus coin is the latest addition to the Perth Mint's Australian Bullion Coin Program and replaces the Platinum Australian Koala which was discontinued in 2000.
The Platinum Australian Platypus is legal Australian tender and is struck from one ounce of 99.95% pure platinum. For 2011, the Platinum Platypus coins have a limited mintage of 30,000 and will continue to have limited mintages for future years of issuance.
The Platinum Australian Platypus bullion coin features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley on the obvers, and a platypus, an iconic symbol of Australia, on the revers.
